Well, it is that time of year again. April 15 marks the deadline of tax filing season. Have you filed? Are you thinking about an extension because you just can’t face it right now?
This year I tried something new. In past years I have paid an accountant $150 (ish) to prepare my taxes. I wanted to be sure I got all the exemptions and filling out IRS complicated forms does not help one feel good about getting all the tax exemptions deserved. Do I get the Earned Income Tax Credit if I have been on unemployment? What do I need to qualify for childcare benefits?
Well, this year I found a way to do my own taxes, easy, effectively and feel like I got every deduction due me. I filed with TurboTax. The ease of this form took away the intimidation factor of the IRS. The longstanding respect and kudos for Intuit give me a sigh of relief as I click yes and no answers to easy questions like, “Do I own my own home?”
Taxes done, filed and refund on the way within an hour. Honestly, it could have been quicker but I was talking on the phone at the same time so it slowed me down. Get it? Easy, more inexpensive than my tax preparer and refund on the way. BTW, if you just have W-2s, the service is free. In my case, there was no money out of pocket. TurboTax will be paid from my refund.
No fuss, no muss. That is the way to handle Tax Season.
